Professional Hockey Player. A native of Hibbing, Minnesota, he played the position of defense for the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks (1944 to 1945). The 6'01, and 250lbs, Bretto also played for several minor league teams of the CHL, CAHL, AHA, USHL, and the IHL, including the Hibbing Maroons, Hibbing Miners, Minneapolis Millers, St. Paul Saints, Cleveland Barons, and the Windsor Bulldogs. Known by the nickname of "Brute" because of his large frame, Bretto is primarily remembered for his rough and tumble style of gameplay. His honours include being named a member of the AHA First All-Star Team in 1938 and 1940, and being named a member of the AHA Second All-Star Team in 1939, 1941, and 1942. A veteran of World War II, Bretto retired from playing hockey following the 1945 to 1946 season. After retiring he went back to his native Hibbing and got into the mining business for several years. He passed away at the age of 94.
