Walter was the son of George and Louise Zuk; the brother of Henry Zuk and Josephine Zuk Petersen; the husband of Barbara Slaughter and the father of Connie Zuk Nisinger. He was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, earning a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Battle Stars. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the VFW Alton Post 1308. A machinist at Owens-Illinois for 33 years, he was a lifetime member of the International Association of Machinists for more than 50 years. In addition, he was a member of the Wood River Moose Lodge, the Alton Eagles, and the East Alton American Legion. Walter was married to the former Barbara Slaughter on December 6, 1947.
