Civil War Union Army Officer. A native of Germany, he was one of many foreign-born St. Louisans whose prior military experience was called upon in the early days of the Civil War. He received his training in the United States, and served as a Lieutenant in the St. Louis region in 1846. The following year he entered the United States Army as a Lieutenant, serving with the 2nd and 12th United States Regular Infantry regiments during the Mexican War. After the start of the Civil War he was elected Colonel and commander of the 1st United States Reserve Corps regiment, who led in the capture of Camp Jackson. He then took command of the 2nd Missouri Volunteer Light Artillery, a position he held until his resignation from active service. He then served in the United States Army's Paymasters' Department.
