English comedian, singer and actor. He was a well-known cockney music hall artist and stage actor at the Court Theatre, Sloane Square. He was a straight actor for many years from his first appearance with the Bancrofts, and it was only a lengthy period without work that he decided to try the music halls. In 1891, he entered the music hall and became a successful singer of original, inventive and personal songs which became very popular at the time, in England and America. He wrote his own songs and sketches, and went on tours, which proved a success. Among his many songs were "My Old Dutch" about a man's long happy marriage to his wife, which was subsequently made into a film of the same name.
