Helen Mae (Dawes) Barnes, 93, died 3:05 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Fountain View Nursing Home, Eldorado.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Bill Gholson officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the funeral home.
She was born June 4, 1913, in Broughton to Arthur and Nella (Porter) Dawes. On Jan. 6, 1934, she married J. Ward Barnes, who preceded her in death on May 19, 1976.
Helen Dawes Barnes went to the Broughton public school and graduated from Broughton High School. She went to Eldorado Township High School, where she graduated in 1932. She went to Southern Illinois University, where she met and married fellow student J.Ward Barnes on Jan. 6, 1934. She later studied at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn. and again at SIU, where she received a bachelor's in education and a master's degree. In 1943, during the teacher shortage of World War II, she began teaching at ETHS. Her first year, she taught bookkeeping, geography and English. In 1946, she became assistant librarian, while continuing to teach English. In 1948, she became librarian and continued in this position until her retirement in 1976.
She had been a resident of Eldorado since 1948, coming from Raleigh. She attended First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Eldorado Memorial Library Board, Illinois Retired Teachers, National Education Association, Raleigh, Saline County and Illinois historical societies, Beta Sigma Phi, Eldorado Women's Club and the Raleigh chapter of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Sue Barnes Lippincott, Ph.D. of Marietta, Ga. and her husband, James Andrew Lippincott, Ph.D.; a grandson, John J. Lippincott, J.D. of Kennesaw, Ga. and his wife Victoria; two granddaughters, Jeanne Lippincott of Oxford, Miss. and her husband Ian Hominick, D.M.A. and Lisa Lippincott, Ph.D. of Berkeley, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan Hominick, Brandon Hominick, Shaela Hominick and Michael Lippincott.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Tom and Fred Dawes.
