Jazz Saxophonist. Starting in the 1940's, he played tenor sax with such heavyweights of the era as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Cootie Williams. His distinctive sound, a full-bodied yet reedy tone, was suited to several different styles of jazz, from big band to rhythm and blues. As his popularity increased, he fronted his own bands and released many recordings that were hughly influential to the next generation of jazz saxophonists.
