American Folk Legend. Affectionately known as "Benny" by the cadets at West Point, Mr. Havens and his wife ran a frequently visited tavern down at the river's edge below Buttermilk Falls, New York. They provided good food, flapjacks, ham, roasted fowl and flagons of hot rum and cider drinks to the "illegal" patrons from the Academy. Benny Havens Tavern became so popular that the song, "Benny Havens, Oh" was written in his honor and is still sung today by the West Point Glee Club. The song was written by Lucius O'Brien in the Winter of 1839-40. Benny Havens influenced the lives of Cadets Edgar Allan Poe, George Armstrong Custer, Jefferson Davis, George Pickett and many other future military notables. Come fill your glasses, fellows, and stand up in a row, To singing sentimentally, we're going for to go, In the army there's sobriety, promotion's very slow, So we'll sing our reminiscences of Benny Havens, oh! Chorus: Oh, Benny Havens, oh! Oh, Benny Havens, oh! So we'll sing our reminiscences of Benny Havens, oh!
