Religious Leader. He was the leader of the state sponsored Catholic church in China. A native of Qingyuan, Hebei Province, he graduated from a Beijing university in 1954 with a degree in Catholicism. Two years later he was appointed a priest and in 1979 he was ordained as a bishop. In 1993 he was named chairman of the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association. A Communist Party loyalist, the state recognized leader of the Catholic Church often found himself in conflict with the Vatican over such issues as China's insistence on selecting its own bishops without seeking papal approval and the Vatican's diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which is claimed as a territory by China. Supporters praised him for his efforts to build the church while striving to be true to China's socialist culture. His detractors, however, faulted him for doing nothing about the persecution of Chinese Catholics, who remained loyal to the Pope. He authored the "Chinese-English Glossary of Everyday Catholic Terms". Cause of death: Cancer
