Prince of Lorraine and Bar. Austrian governor of the Netherlands, 1744-1780. Popular and enlightened, but a poor military leader who was defeated by Frederick the Great. His tomb in the pictured chapel of the cathedral was destroyed during the revolutionary period.

Gravesite Details

On October 22, 1780, the heart of H.R.H. Duke Charles-Alexander of Lorraine, eleventh child of Leopold, Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Governor of the Netherlands, who died in Brussels on the previous July 4, was placed on the coffin of H.R.H.
