Motion Picture Screenwriter. Born in Ukraine, she began her career as stage actress in Germany. With the rise of Hitler she was forced into exile with her husband, the writer Bertold Viertel, and they moved to the United States. She worked for MGM as a screenwriter, particularly in films for her friend Greta Garbo, such as "Queen Christina" (1933), "Anna Karenina" (1935), and "Two-Faced Woman" (1941). Viertel's Hollywood home became a gathering place for German exiles, among them Heinrich Mann and Gottfried Reinhardt. Her credits also include "The Painted Vail" (1934), "Conquest" (1937), "Deep Valley" (1947) and "I Battellieri del Volga" (1958). Viertel wrote an autobiography, "The Kindness of Strangers", which was published in 1969. She was the mother of author Peter Viertel.
