Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first as Major of the 10th Pennsylvania Reserves, that as Colonel and commander of the nine-month enlistment regiment 151st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He led his unit at the Battles of Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, but missed the Battle of Gettysburg due to illness (where it was heroically commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George McFarland). He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services”. After the war he served as Pennsylvania State Auditor General (1872 to 1875), and as United States Marshal for the Dakota Territory from 1882 to 1886.
