Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Musician in Company C, 55th Illinois Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 19,1863. His citation reads "A drummer boy, 14 years of age, and severely wounded and exposed to a heavy fire from the enemy, he persistently remained upon the field of battle until he had reported to Gen. W. T. Sherman the necessity of supplying cartridges for the use of troops under command of Colonel Malmborg". His Medal was awarded to him on April 23, 1896. He was one of nine 55th Illinois Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Corporal Robert M. Cox, 1st Lieutenant John H. Fisher, Chaplain Milton L. Haney, Corporal James W. Larrabee, Private Robert A. Lower, Private Jerome Morford, Private Jacob Sandford and Corporal John Warden). A historical novel, "The Drummer Boy of Vicksburg," by G. Clifton Wisley, was published in 1997 about the life of Orion Howe during the Civil War.
