Actress. She received stardom status as a popular Broadway ingenue from age 17 onward. Her credits included the original silent film productions of "Six Cylinder Love" in 1923, resuming her stage role as a leading lady, and "The Cat and the Canary" in 1927. She and her husband left the stage for Hollywood in 1928. She blossomed into an actress in the 1930s. She received recognition with several awards, including a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress and the New York Drama Critics prize for her Broadway performance in the 1956 Pulitzer Prize winner "Long Day's Journey Into Night" with her husband, Fredric March. She appeared with her husband in several movies, which included "Les Misérables" in 1935, "Mary of Scotland" in 1936, "Inherit the Wind" in 1960, and her best according to critics, "Another Part of the Forest" in 1948. Three years after her husband's death, she appeared in 1978 in her only made-for-TV movie, "First, You Cry."
