Arab-Israeli War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Wichita, Kansas, he served as a US Navy Commander, in command of the technical research ship USS Liberty (AGTR-5). On June 8, 1967, while sailing in in international waters, off the Sinai Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea, the USS Liberty was attacked without warning by Israeli jet fighter aircraft and motor torpedo boats. Badly wounded in the attack, Commnader McGonagle remained at his battle station and continued to exercise firm command of his ship. For more than 17 hours, he maneuvered his ship, directed its defense, supervised the control of flooding, fire and saw to the care of the casualties. For most conspicuous gallantry, he was promoted Captain and awarded the Medal of Honor.
