U.S. Congressman. Successful in agricultural pursuits, he was a member of the Board of Supervisors of Sangamon County from 1877 to 1878, a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives from 1882 to 1886 and served in the Illinois State Senate from 1890 to 1894. In addition, he was president of the Caldwell State Bank of Chatham and president of the Farmers' National Bank of Springfield from 1885 to 1898. In 1899, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh and Fifty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1905 and was reelected to the Sixtieth Congress, serving from 1907 to 1909. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in the banking business until his death at age 76.
