Roman Catholic Saint. Cuthbert was the most important British saint in popular culture until the death of Thomas a Becket in 1170. His miraculously preserved body was disinterred, incorrupt, eleven years after his death and again in 1104 when the body was laid in the shrine at the East end of Durham Cathedral, where it remains to this day. The monastic community he founded, which subsequently founded the cathedral at Durham, became one of the most powerful and wealthy in Europe - an outcome Cuthbert himself would have wryly appreciated. Though he himself preferred a solitary, contemplative life on the remote island of Lindisfarne (still known as Holy Island), he was called into leadership and political roles. (bio by D. Wyatt)
