Admiral of France. Born in Dunkirk, he began his career as a notorious pirate. At the Battle of Texel (May 1694) against the Dutch, he captured 30 boats carrying wheat, which virtually saved France from famine. This made him a popular hero and led to his being given a patent of nobility by the King.
