Actress. A star of the silent film era, she is best remembered as one of Mack Sennett's bathing beauties, a group of young starlets (which also included Gloria Swanson and Mabel Normand) who appeared bare-legged in Mack Sennett's early comedies. She was born one of four children (she also had two sisters and one brother) to James Jacob Crosthwaite and Ida M. Ritter Crosthwaite in San Diego, California. She made her way to Hollywood, California, while in her early teens and she made her actual film debut playing herself as a champion swimmer at the age of sixteen in director Henry Lehrman's comedy short, "The Husband's" (1913). The film which also stars Charles Inslee and Charles Avery tells the story of three couples, both husbands and wives, who decide to spend the day at the beach. Husbands struck by the beauty of the swimming girls decide to come in closer contact with them. Sneaking away from the wives, they wrap life preservers around themselves, dig up an old anchor, wade out into the surf and anchor themselves there and wait to be rescued by the young lady swimmers. The swimming girls make an attempt to rescue the three chaps and discover it is a ruse to make their acquaintance and leave them to the mercy of the waves, from which they are later glad to be rescued. It was during this time that she was noticed by Mack Sennett and she would go onto become one of his bathing beauties. Besides, "The Husband's" (1913), her other film credits include, "The Beauty Bunglers" (1915), "Gussie Rivals Jonah" (1915), "Those Bitter Sweets" (1915), "A Game Of Old Knight" (1915), "Fickle Fatty's Fall" (1915), "A Janitor's Wife Temptation" (1915), "Fatty And The Broadway Stars" (1915), "By Stork Delivery" (1916), "The Surf Girl" (1916), and "His Lying Heart" (1916). Her last film was "Brainstorm" in 1917. On July 10, 1915, she had married Adolf Linkof and the couple had a daughter named Laveta Ida born on August 12, 1917. She continued with Mack Sennett until the 1920s and also toured with water shows. She later retired (some sources say 1932, possibly earlier or 1947) from acting to concentrate on married life and to run a coffee shop business. She also worked as a maid. Some records show that she was married to Adolf Linkof until her death on November 8, 1962, but other records show she was twice married and once divorced from a man named Warren L. Rice before 1927 and after 1940. She was listed as Mrs. Ivy Rice Barrett in her newspaper obituaries and on her California death certificate. She passed away from pulmonary complications of her heart and lungs on November 8, 1962, at the age of 64, at the Santa Fe Coast Lines Hospital in Los Angeles, California. She was buried at the Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. She was the First Cousin, Three times removed of actor John Crosthwaite.
