Civil War Union Brigadier General. A pre-War lawyer and Kent County, Michigan prosecuting attorney, he entered the Union Army with the commission of Major in the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 10, 1861. Promoted to Colonel and commander of the regiment on October 28, 1861, he led his troops through the 1862 Peninsular Campaign, and was severely wounded in action at the May 31, 1862 Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia. He returned to the field in August 1862 during the 2nd Bull Run Campaign, but his wound had not healed enough and ruptured. He returned to his home of Grand Rapids, Michigan to recover, and was promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers on November 29, 1862. Placed in charge of the Draft Depot military recruitment and mustering office in Grand Rapids, his wound continued to weaken him, and he eventually died of its effects in January 1864.
