Obituaries. Sam Colt died Jan. 18 on Lopez Island. He was born Aug. 25, 1934 in Evanston, Ill. Colt worked in coroners' offices on the east and west coasts, and in construction in the San Francisco area. He came to the San Juan Islands in 1970 and lived on Center, Decatur and Lopez Islands.

He is remembered by his role as Santa Claus, his service as president of the Lopez Cemetery Association, as officiant at weddings and funerals and for his overpowering sense of humor and human kindness.

Colt is survived by sons Timothy and David, daughter Barbara, and two grandchildren of Pacifica, Calif.

Memorial services were held Jan. 26 at Center Church on Lopez, with interment at Lopez Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lopez Cemetery Association.
