Mother of author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Mollie was the oldest child born to Louisa Allen and Philip Francis McQuillan, a wealthy businessman. She attended the Convent of the Visitation School in Mendota Heights (near St. Paul), Minnesota, which her father helped found. On February 12, 1890, she married Edward Fitzgerald in Washington, D.C. The reception took place at a townhome in the nation's capital that was kept by her mother, and Governor William Merriam of Minnesota was in attendance. The couple spent their honeymoon in Europe and returned to St. Paul. Mollie and Edward had five children, though only the two youngest survived infancy: Louisa, Mary Ashton, Francis Scott Key, and Annabel. The family moved to Buffalo, New York, when Edward's business failed in 1898. They lived for a short while in Syracuse, New York, but returned to Buffalo in September 1903. In 1908, they moved back to St. Paul, where they lived until the moved to Washington, D.C. to be close to their son, F. Scott.
