US Senator. He served during the Civil War as a Corporal in Company D, 135th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Elected as a Delegate from the Washington Territory in the United States House of Representatives, he served from March to November, 1889. When Washington was admitted as a State, he was elected as one of its first two Senators to the United States Senate, serving from 1889 to 1893.
