Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on July 24, 1869 for his actions as a sergeant while serving in Company B, 8th US Cavalry against the Apache Indians in Arizona Territory from August to October 1868. He was one of 34 men who received the Medal of Honor at the same location during that time. An Irish immigrant, he joined the US Army following the American Civil War and was assigned to the Western frontier. He was part of a small force of one of two companies numbering 50-60 troopers, who were tasked to protect settlements from Apache war parties and during this 90-day period, he and other soldiers frequently faced the Apaches in heavy fighting, especially in ambushes and sniper attacks, during their patrols. After his discharge, he settled in Brooklyn, New York where he died at the age of 36. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Bravery in scouts and actions against Indians."
