US Congressman. Born at "Weston," an estate near Vienna that was owned by the prominent Steele and Henry families, he was educated in Dorchester County, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1819. In addition to practicing law Steele owned and operated a plantation near Vienna called "Indian Town." He served in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1822 and 1824, and again in 1829 and 1830. In 1832 he was one of Maryland's Electors in the contest for President, and cast his ballot for Henry Clay and John Sergeant. In 1834 he won a special election for the US House of Representatives as an Anti-Jacksonian, filling the seat left vacant when Littleton P. Dennis died. He was elected to a full term later in 1834, and served from May, 1834 to March, 1837. In 1838 he was the unsuccessful Whig candidate for Governor, after which he resumed practicing law and managing Indian Town.
