Major League Baseball Player, Manager. A native of Brooklyn, he was an outfielder for eleven seasons (1942 to 1952) with the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a member of two National League pennant-winning teams (1948 Braves and 1952 Dodgers) and appeared in nine World Series games with 5 hits. His other notable career highlights include two-time selection to the National League All-Star Team (1945 and 1948), two-time league leader in hits (1945 with 224 and 1947 with 191), league leader in doubles (1945 with 47) and home runs (1945 with 28). During the 1945 season, Holmes hit safely in 37 consecutive games. In addition to playing, he served as manager for parts of two seasons with the Braves (1951 to 1952). In 1,320 career regular season games, Holmes had 1,507 hits with a .302 lifetime batting average. He died of natural causes.
