US Vice President and US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he was elected in 1908 as Vice President that saw William Howard Taft elected as the 27th US President. He graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York in 1878 and remained there to study law. In 1880 he was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Utica, New York. At the age of 29, he entered politics and was elected as mayor of Utica. In 1886 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, first from New York's 23rd, 25th and 27th congressional districts, serving a total of twenty years (1887 until 1891 and 1893 until 1909). From 1895 until 1909 he served as Chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs. In 1908 he was nominated as the Republican candidate for Vice President on the ticket with William Howard Taft and won, defeating the Democratic ticket of William Jennings Bryan and John W. Kern. He died in office from complications of Bright's disease at the age of 57, only a week before the 1912 election, in which he was running with President Taft for another term. To date he is the last US Vice President to die in office.
