Author. He and his twin brother Peter were born in Liverpool, and he was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. His hit play "Sleuth" (1970) was adapted into a well-received film starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. Shaffer received Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Play in 1971, and Best Screenplay in 1973. He also wrote screenplays for director Alfred Hitchcock's return to England, "Frenzy" (1972), the British cult thriller "The Wicker Man" (1973), and the Agatha Christie adaptations "Death on the Nile" and "Evil Under the Sun". He was married twice. He and his brother wrote novels together under the name Peter Anthony.
