Massena Observer - Feb 27, 1945
Pvt Leonard Cohen, 19, previously reported as missing in action in Belgium since Jan 5, died of wounds on Jan 13 while a prisoner of the German government, according to word received by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abe Cohen, E. Orvis St, Saturday.
The telegram read as follows:
"The Secretary of War ask that I assure you of his deep sympathy in the loss of your son, Pvt Leonard Cohen. A report received states he died Jan 13 as result of wounds received in action while a prisoner of war of the German Government. Confirming letter follows. J. A. Ulio, the adjutant-general.
The parents received their first word on Jan 23. It had merely stated that he had been missing since Jan 5.
He was in a medical detachment, infantry battalion, in Patton's Third Army. He went overseas in September and after being in England a few weeks he was sent ot France and Belgium.
He was born in Massena Mar 11, 1925 and was graduated from Massena High School in 1943. In high school he was business manager of The Northern Star, took part in senior plays and prize speaking contests. He was a member of the chorus and played three years in the band. The fourth year he was drum major.
He enlisted immediately after graduation and trained in the ASTP program at the University of Pennsylvania until the program was closed. He was then transferred to Camp Grant, Ill.
His only brother, Sgt Saul Cohen, is also with Patton's Third Army.
