Son of Samuel and Rebecca (Williamson) Hepburn. His father was a noted Pennsylvania judge. Educated at Jefferson College, University of Virginia and Princeton. Ordained Presbyterian minister. Taught at University of North Carolina and Davidson College before coming to Miami University as professor. Became the last president of "Old Miami" in 1871 and served until the University closed in 1873. He then returned to Davidson where was professor and later president. He returned to Miami as professor of English literature when it re-opened in 1885 and remained there until his retirement in 1908. Member, Beta Theta Pi.

Two children: Henrietta "Ettie" Hepburn and Charles McGuffey Hepburn who was dean of the Indiana University School of Law.
