Governor of North Carolina. He studied medicine before immigrating to America in 1764. Burke was a member of the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1781, when he became the third Governor of North Carolina under its State constitution. He was kidnaped by Tories in 1781 and carried to Charleston, South Caronina, where he was held as a hostage. He succeeded in escaping and resumed his duties as Governor, serving from February until April, 1782. He died at his estate, "Tyaquin," near Hillsborough, the following year.
