Dale V. Lally Jr., 65, Pompano Beach, Fla., formerly of Canton, NY, died of a heart attack July 21, 2004 while on his annual expedition to watch the Tour de France bicycle race in the French Alps.

Mr. Lally served in the Air Force in Formosa and Germany and served 26 years in the Navy Reserve. A retired naval captain, he came to Canton, NY in August 1990 as the language laboratory director at St. Lawrence University, where he also taught German. He held this position until June 1999.

Born Jan. 4, 1939, in Kansas City, Mo., son of Dale V. and Bernadine Beebe Lally, he was a graduate of Rockhurst High School, Kansas City, attended Rockhurst College and Yale and Georgetown universities and was a graduate of Kansas University, Lawrence. A marriage to Doris R. Zimmerman ended in divorce.

He was well-known in Canton as a tireless cycling advocate and a leader in the Canton Bicycle Club, organizing and leading rides in St. Lawrence County and Canada. His enthusiasm and leadership took the club from fewer than a dozen members to more than 100. He was a regional officer of the League of American Bicyclists and was responsible for bringing two of its GEAR rallies to Canton, with more than 2,000 cyclists participating.

He was an adviser in the creation of the Canton Recreational Trail bordering Partridge Run Golf Course and was internationally known as a leader of bicycle tours in Europe and the United States. He wrote and co-wrote books including "Best Bike Rides in NY, NJ, & PA" and "B&Bs and Bikes in the Mississippi Valley."

Also a ham radio operator and sailing enthusiast, he moved in 1999 to Pompano Beach, where he served as vice commodore of the Sailing Singles of South Florida Yacht Club. He continued as a writer and active cycling leader and served on the Broward County Bicycle Advisory Committee, campaigning for the East Coast Greenway, a 2,600-mile project planned to extend from Key West to Maine.
