Republic of Guinea President. He served as President of the Republic of Guinea from April 1984 until his death in 2008. He came to political power in a military coup following the death of former President Ahmed Sekou Toure. He was re-elected as president in 1993, 1998 and 2003. He survived a army mutiny in 1996 over disputed pay wages and an attempted political assassination in 2005.
