Sgt. Major Maurice Joseph LaFrance, 44, US Marine Corps, died unexpectedly on July 19, 1969.

Major LaFrance was born in Alfred, Ontario, a son of Raoul and Irene Ouellette LaFrance, on July 7, 1925. The family moved to Massena NY in 1926 and he attended Massena schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines Sept 12, 1942, at the age of 17 in World War II.

He trained at Parris Island, S.C., New River, NC and San Diego, California before going overseas to the Pacific Theater. He served in Okinawa and Guam and was wounded in Bouganville, for which he received the Purple Heart medal.

He and Miss Katherine Metz, Monroe Michigan, were married Jan 26, 1952. At the time she was an ensign in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.
