Dr. Joseph Robert Bryson, 79, of 104 Lake Crest, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Congressman Joseph Raleigh Bryson and Ruth Rucker Bryson, and a graduate of Greenville High School, The Citadel and the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a retired family physician, physician for the City of Greenville and physician of the VA Clinic.

Dr. Bryson was a member of Northgate Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Pleasantburg Rotary Club, served on the City Council and as Water Commissioner.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Virginia Messervy Bryson; a daughter, Virginia Bryson Dusenbury, of Greenville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph Raleigh Bryson of Charleston, and Robert Paul Bryson and his wife Edith, of Greenville; a sister, Judy B. Nelson, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Bryson Thackson; and two brothers, William J. Bryson and F. David Bryson.

Memorials may be made to Northgate Baptist Church, 633 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.

Service: 10 a.m. Saturday at the Remembrance Chapel of Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the chapel following the service.
