Velma Paquita McGlaun was born on 30 April 1883 in Bremond, Texas, to farmer James Edmund "Jimmy" McGlaun and his wife Laura Emma Thweatt. Velma married Caldwell Elias "Carl" Smith on 19 June 1901 in Lavaca County. The Storm of 1900 forced Velma's husband and father to seek employment in the boomtown Guffey, Texas (later known as Spindletop). In November of the 1903, after harvesting their crops and the birth of their first child, Carl and Velma left Lavaca County with the McGlaun family in four wagons during a terrible rainy season. The flood-choked streams and muddy roads presented quite a problem in their travel. It took the family two months to cover the 195 miles from Lavaca County to Liberty. The last 45 miles were made by train with Carl as wagon master. Carl and Velma's children were Laura Melissa, Ernest Clinton, Elmo James, and Elva Smith. The family moved from Guffey to Odessa, Texas. Velma McGlaun Smith died, 20 February 1969, aged 85, in Midland, Texas, and was buried with her husband at Fairview Cemetery.
