United States Naval Officer. Attained rank of Captain in the United States Navy in 1800, the highest rank attainable at the time. Commanded the frigate "USS Philadelphia" during the conflict with the Barbary Coast. The ship ran around and was eventually burned by Stephen Decatur; Bainbridge was captured. Commanded the frigate "USS Constitution" (know as Old Ironsides) during the War of 1812. Established the 1st United States Naval school in Boston in 1815. Commander of the Philadelphia Naval Yard in 1821, and was named commander of United States Navy in 1823.
