Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At 23 years of age, he went to California to make his fortune in the gold fields. After a brief, frustrating stay, he went to Walla Walla, Washington and opened a law office. After a year, he returned to the East and settled in Olney, Illinois where he resumed the practice of law with a relative, Horace Hayward as his partner. In 1856, he became the editor of a fiercely anti-slavery newspaper, "Egypt." In 1862, he assisted in organizing the 98th Illinois Infantry. At first, he was made lieutenant colonel of the regimen, but succeeded to command it after the wounding of Colonel Funkhouser at the Battle of Chickamauga in September of 1863. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted a brigadier genera "for long, faithful, and gallant services" during the war. After he was mustered out, he returned to Olney to resume the practice o law. He was unsuccessful in an attempt to gain a seat in Congress, but was a presidential elector for Ulysses S. Grant in the election of 1868.
