First Illinois state attorney general, 1819; U.S. Representative from Illinois, 1819-1927. Married Julia Edwards, a daughter of Gov. Ninian Edwards on May 6, 1821. She died when quite young. Father of Civil War Union Army general John P. Cook. Cook County Illinois was named after him four years after his death.

Note: Body moved to Oak Ridge Cemetery from Hutchinson Cemetery in October 1866. His name is etched on the Lamb family monument (his son's wife was Susan Lamb) but dates are illegible.
