First Wife: Matilda (Frampton) Hawk
Second Wife: Sarah (Stephens) Hawk
John and Matilda brought their six young sons on the Oregon Trail. After a very difficult journey, they reached Oregon in about November of 1852. Matilda was quite ill, and she died in January of 1853. John found a home or homes for his six young sons, and he set out, first by homemade boat, and then on foot, from the Portland, Oregon area, through Olympia, Washington, to Steilcoom, where there was work to be had. He returned in the Spring of 1853, married Sarah Ann Stephens, and returned with his new wife, and his six boys to the Olympia area, where they homesteaded on what is now known as Hawks Prairie. John and Sarah went on to have seven more children. John was a member of the Washington Territorial Legislature, and he was a relatively wealthy land owner and farmer.
