Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 5th California Infantry on October 5, 1861. He was promoted to major in September of 1862 and served as acting adjutant general and chief of staff for General William Tecumseh Sherman. On October 31, 1864, he was made a brevet brigadier general for services rendered during the war. He was Mustered Out on August 23, 1865.
