David was the tail gunner on bomber plane "Blind Date." A few others on the plane: 1st Lt. Robert E McCarthy of Scranton, PA, 1st Lt. Hugh C Wallace of NYC, NY and 1st Lt. James L Louden of Pittsburgh, PA. The plane was shot down and David parachuted out. David was only a few miles from the Allies' border in Belgium when he stopped to pet a horse; there were Germans there in a trench who captured him. He was sent to a prison camp; they practically starved there.
