Former Resident, Dies


Mrs. Lela M. Birdwell, 88-year-old widow, of R.J. Birdwell and a former resident of Del Rio, died Monday in Beverly Hills, Calif., following a six months' illness brought
on by strokes and complicated by pneumonia.

For 25 years she had been well known in financial circles
in Beverly Hills.

She and her husband were traveling Methodist evangelists
in the 1920. They reared five children, educating them in
Texas schools. When his health became impaired, he began
land operations and was an early oil explorer in Texas.

Rites will be held in San Angelo at 11:30 a.m; Thursday
in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church with
the Rev. Dr. Elmer J. Hierholzer officiating. Burial
will be made in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo, where
her husband is buried.

Mrs. Birdwell, who remained a widow for 50 years, was born
Nov. 16, 1882, in Malakoff,Tex.

Survivors include a son, Russell Birdwell, a Beverly
Hills publicist; a sister, Mrs. Mary Waldrom of Weatherford;
three grandchildren, Jo Ann Rice, Robin Rice and Mrs.
Dorothea (C.L) Meyer, all of Beverly Hills, Calif.
