The son of Russian immigrants, he was best known for his fatherly roles in films and television, most notably that of 'Colonel Gordon Kirkwood' in the television series "Mister Ed" from 1963 to 1966. He was one of the original founders of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and served as its eleventh President from 1957 to 1958. He appeared in more than 100 films including "Murders In the Rue Morgue" (1932), "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" (1944), "They Were Expendable" (1945), "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946), "Little Women" (1949), "Cattle Drive" (1951), "On Moonlight Bay" (1951), "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" (1953), "Peyton Place" (1957), "The Absent- Minded Professor (1961), "Son of Flubber" (1963), "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970) and "Peggy Sue Got Married" (1986).
