New Hampshire Governor. He served as the 53rd governor of the State of New Hampshire, as a Republican, from 1911 to 1913. Born in Chicago, his family relocated to New Hampshire when he was nine. A graduate of Harvard College in 1896, he was a New Hampshire state representative from 1905 to 1909 and a state senator from 1909 to 1910. Following being governor, he had two unsuccessful bids for the United States Senate in 1913 and 1926. He is remembered for his environmental concern with forestry in the White Mountains and for sponsoring legislation that led to the first direct primary law east of the Mississippi River. After his retirement, he worked on several commissions in New Hampshire and died at Peterborough. Both his son, Perkins Bass, and grandson, Charles Bass, served in the United State House of Representatives.
