Dedicated to the memory of the 276 Catholic pioneer men, women and children who were first interred in the old Kell Cemetery, originally known as Santa Cruces (Holy Cross) Cemetery. Kell Cemetery was deeded to the Roman Catholic Church by Thomas and Mary Kell on Sept. 22, 1870, and consecrated on May 18, 1871. Burials have not been made in the cemetery since 1890.
In October, 1984, the remains of those still interred there were removed to Calvary Catholic Cemetery in order for the land to be used for the Guadalupe corridor light rail system.
Among the remains of those early day pioneers are Frenchman Louis Pellier, who introduced the prune to the Santa Clara Valley, as well as members of the Berryessa, Alviso, and Bernal families who were early Spanish settlers of the San Jose area.
