U.S. Senator. Moving to New Jersey in 1857, he later engaged in agricultural pursuits, the real estate business and in construction, in Plainfield. He was a member of the Plainfield town council, when elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving 1911-17. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until he retired to Florida and resided in Miami, until his death.
