As a Catholic Irishman, he was a charter member of Fianna Eireann, an Irish nationalist youth organization, at the first meeting in 1909 and rose to Chief Scout. In 1912 he became head of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. During 1913 he was one of a number of Fianna who conducted military training at the Forester's Hall in Rutland Square, and in November that year, he joined the Provisional Committee of the newly formed Irish Volunteers. He was a single man who lived with an older sister and her family. He commanded Jameson's Distillery during the Easter of 1916 uprising. During the week of Easter of April of 1916, the Easter Rising was an armed insurrection against British Rule in Ireland. The Irish's aim was to establish independent for the Irish Republic while Britain was engaged in World War I. The Easter Rising resulted in at least 485 deaths with more than half being Irish civilians. Starting on May 3rd, he was one of the 14 Irish leaders of the Uprising to be court-marshalled and executed by a British firing squad at Kilmainham Prison. His execution was on May 8th.
