Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1977 to 1985), he played at the running back position in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. Born Richard James Kane, he attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, California, and played collegiate football at the University of Oregon before transferring to San Jose State. He was chosen by the Lions during the 3rd round of the 1977 NFL Draft and appeared in 125 career regular season games, rushing for 1,486 yards with 12 touchdowns, and recording 76 receptions for 761 yards with 2 touchdowns. Kane enjoyed his most successful season during his rookie year with Detroit in 1977, when he rushed for 421 yards with 4 touchdowns, and recorded 18 receptions for 186 yards, while he shared playing time with Dexter Bussey. Following his football career, he worked in the automotive industry. During 2005, he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident resulting with the loss of one of his legs. He died of complications from pneumonia.
