William enlisted in the US Army 11 Jul 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland. Served as Private 1st Class during WWII, in the Signal Corps; 7th Pursuit Squadron & 49th Pursuit Squadron in the South Pacific arena. Pvt. Bray was taken prisoner by the Japanese and died at Camp 504, reported date of death was 19 June 1942. He was interred at Fort William McKinley in Manila, the Phillipines; and later re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery on 29 July 1948. William was survived by his mother and step father, Joseph J Dickinson; sister, Clara Bray Burrett; and a step-sister, Jacqueline Dickinson Moore.
