In 1798 he was listed in the Buckinghamshire Directory as a wheeler in the Posse Comitas. This was a list of able bodied men aged between 15 and 60, who could be called upon in case of Napoleonic invasion. His sons John and William were also listed.

" In memory of John Coltman who departed this life November 18 1808 aged 57, also Elizabeth wife of the above, died May 4 1814 aged 67. Thomas Coltman son of the above died February 5 1813 aged 29."
